Communication was never one of my biggest talents -- even to this day. I can talk to someone, but to engage in conversation troubles my demeanor. Twitter was created for me. It was made for someone who simply wants to say something and say it quickly. The 140-character limit is perfect for a short attention span. A short time to write something and communicate the purpose -- a laugh, a theory, a fragment of creative randomness -- in the blink of an eye. We should be so lucky to live in a world of Twitter-sized communication. And then there is my audience. For people like me, who have the hunger for attention, the audience is important. Current students, former students, future students, fellow teachers, strangers with strange faces from strange parts of the world -- they sit before my little stage of who-knows-what. And it's narcissistic to the core, similar to all those Facebook friends people pile up. The favorites are nice. The retweets are nicer. The new followers are welcome at any time and never a capacity is reached. Twitter de-clutters my mind and helps to dish out thoughts to an imaginary world when there is no one to listen -- or anyone who would want to listen. To this day, I'm still not a fan of social media, but the crowd is waiting -- or so I think and hope -- and I certainly need it more than it needs me.
